What a domain costs after the first year
A first-year price is an offer. A renewal is what the name actually costs to keep, every year, for as long as you want it. On 56% of the extensions priced here the second figure is at least twice the first, and almost nobody shows you both at once.
How this is measured
Both figures come from one offer: the registrar with the cheapest first year for that extension, and that same registrar's own renewal. Pairing the cheapest first year from one registrar with the cheapest renewal from another would describe a deal nobody sells, and would overstate every rise on this page.
It is the offer a shopper sorting by price actually clicks — which is exactly the offer whose renewal is worth knowing.

Before you buy on a first-year price
- Read the renewal, not the offer. You pay the first-year price once and the renewal every year after. Over five years the renewal is four fifths of what you spend.
- A cheap first year can lose over three years. Which registrar is cheapest depends on the term, so the index shows a three-year and a five-year total rather than a single winner.
- Transferring away does not reset the price. The renewal is set by the registry and marked up by the registrar. A transfer changes the markup, never the registry's own fee.
- The figures here exclude the ICANN fee and tax. Every generic extension carries a per-year ICANN transaction fee that registrars add at checkout.
